Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative entered the response on his behalf in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the proceedings terminated for several reasons including that his client, a critic of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

James Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel the legal representative told the magistrate they planned to file various legal requests to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was improperly assigned to assume control of the legal matter.

Mr Comey's case was initially overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his investigation into an additional rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the legal venue on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Upon hearing to the judge state his legal protections and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the moment, the director was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors claim James Comey provided false information to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the Senate by saying he had not approved an individual at the agency to release to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he said he was not guilty and accused Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"We have understood for years that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a court case."

The accusations against James Comey came after Trump published on social media calling for his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
