Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when a pair of track officials crossed the track right in his path

The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his compromised front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be permitted to just sprint across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Official Investigation Underway

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, the race directors was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the FIA

"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that section"

"The examination is ongoing what transpired following that moment"
