Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
